Health & Social Care

This vocational course was introduced to Saint Aidan’s for the first time in September 2007. The latest specification was introduced for first teaching in September 2022 by Oxford Cambridge and RSA, as Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Health and Social Care (J835).

Level 1/Level 2 Cambridge National in Health and Social Care is for learners who wish to acquire knowledge, understanding and technical skills through vocational contexts and build on cross curricular knowledge and skills from other GCSE subjects.

There are also strong opportunities for post-16 progressions in this important sector.

The course gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. There are three units of learning to complete and students must demonstrate attainment across all related units in order to achieve the qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2.

Units R033 & RO34 are assessed internally through context based assignments. These are then verified internally for their overall grade. This style of assessment promotes deep learning through the connection between knowledge and practice. These two units focus on:

R033:  Supporting individuals through life events

  • Growth and development through a life stage
  • Life events and sources of support for individuals
  • Research and recommend support to meet individual needs

R034:  Creative and therapeutic activities

  • Plan a creative activity
  • Deliver the planned creative activity
  • Evaluate your own performance

There is one exam assessment that is verified externally (Unit R032- Principles of care in a health and social care setting.) This unit builds directly on Units R033 & RO34 and enables learning to be brought together and related to a real-life situation. The final Unit will be an exam of 1hour 15 minutes and will cover the following areas.

R032: Principles of care in health and social care settings

  • The rights of service users in health and social care settings Person-centred values
  • Effective communication in heath and social care
  • Protecting service users and service providers in health and social care settings
