Robotics Competition

Four of Saint Aidan’s students Adam Catley, Matthew Collinson, Curtis Fisher, Toby Jones competed in Blackpool Robo at Blackpool & Fylde College on Friday 28th June.

Blackpool Robo is a Lego Mindstorms competition where students need to build and code a robot to complete a series of 5 rounds based around various Blackpool locations. The 5 rounds tested various skills including navigating a maze, moving blocks to build a Blackpool tower, feeding the animals at the zoo and following a line.

The students returned for the second time having placed 3rd last year. It was tight in rounds 4 and 5, as we slipped from first to third in round 4 but we finally came out the victors out of 8 teams.

The students loved it and were finally rewarded for all their hard work with a fantastic trophy and £1000 to use on more robot related materials.

Quote from Toby Jones:

We arrived at Blackpool and Fylde College at about 9AM. The building in which the competition was to be held looked like a clothes hanger, and was very modern. The first thing that we had to do was fill in these questionnaires about our personalities. Things like our teamwork abilities, social skills etc. I filled out the form very accurately and began to resume work on the robot. After 20 minutes, the first round started, the robot was meant to follow a black line but it had a mind of its own. A few victories later, and we (surprisingly) won!
