Saint Aidan’s Goes To The Polls

By

This week is UK Parliament Week, and we are celebrating at Saint Aidan’s with a variety of activities throughout the week. As well as Personal Development lessons tying in with the theme, it will also be our theme for this week’s worship, to encourage our students to consider the importance of decisions made in parliament, and how they can affect our every day lives.

We would also like our students to consider the importance of voting, and on Friday we will be holding our Saint Aidan’s mock referendum, where students will vote YES or NO to the question:

“Should the voting age in the United Kingdom be lowered from 18 to 16?”

Some of our KS3 leadership team have been busy preparing campaigns for the YES and NO side of this debate, and we are looking forward to hearing their opinions throughout the week.

Our local MP Cat Smith will also be visiting the school on Friday, to see the referendum in action, as well as taking part in a live “Question Time” with Year 8 students. Her assistant will also be meeting with a year 11 Personal Development class to talk about her path into a career in politics.

It is great to see our students actively involved in political debate. It may be that one day one of them may be Prime Minister themselves!
