AWAKING in the middle of a prodigiously tough snore, and sitting up in bed to get his thoughts together, Scrooge had no occasion to be told that the bell was again upon the stroke of One.
A Christmas Carol Stave 3
It was indeed one o’clock in the morning when former Year 8 pupil Benji Fisher joined us all the way from Brisbane, Australia (he did have parental permission!) via video call for our A Christmas Carol inspired character creation session.
Our band of intrepid heroes-to-be blinked and mysteriously arrived in The World-Between-Worlds: an ethereal realm of destiny and discovery.
Greeting them was Mage Bocaj Yelram who guided the team to their first challenge: facing their past.
One saw an image of themselves as a child, others saw someone leaving through a doorway and some saw a simple window – but were they looking in or out of it?
After fighting the ghosts of their past, the group then battled some literal ghosts!
With their past safely behind them, the next room saw some different challenges. Two players saw a homeless person and whilst both helped, one did so selflessly, the other one not so much! Two found a locked treasure chest and again, one was conflicted about trying to open it, the other one not so much! And one saw an empty house that he was too afraid to enter.
In the final room, destiny awaited in the form of a giant, flaming skull. Two players saw a familiar door – how did it make them feel? The same fear as before or a new-found sense of purpose? Three players saw nothing: one viewed it an omen of their imminent death, another saw it as a sign that his destiny is his to choose, another felt the familiar ache of loneliness. What does it all mean?
As the flames grew higher and the smoke thicker, the players blinked away the rising water in their eyes and were transported back to the realms they came from and discovered their entire journey had taken place inside an actual blink of an eye.
Where will our adventurers appear and what will they bring from their fantastical journey through The World Between Worlds with them?
A great session was had by all.
It was an absolute gift to see Benji. His character, Saen the monk, was last seen sacrificing himself by slaying a fearsome chuul with a spectacularly mystical blade before disappearing down under the waves, never to be seen again.
His former team, Tuesday Trouble, are currently trying to find items on a birthday wish list for a rather destructive young ogre! When the rest of team returns from their pantomime expedition, we will see if our heroes can retrieve all the presents in time to prevent an explosive outburst!
We miss you, Benji! Whilst we know you will be playing Dungeons and Dragons in your new school, we know it won’t be as much fun without us!
May you roll Nat 20s in all your adventures!
